HOMEWORK 4-25-13

Each time I write in the homework date I am amazed by how quickly time is flying!  Before we know it, the end of the year will be here!  :(

This week we have been practicing and reviewing Fact Families.  While doing this, we noticed that students were having difficulty writing the Fact Families if the answer was the first part of the number sentence.  For instance, instead of writing 7 = 15-8, they were writing number sentences like 7 = 8-15 or 15 = 7 - 8.  We have spent time focusing on really focusing on what the equal sign really means and on checking to make sure number sentences they compose are true and make sense when checking them.

When playing Fact Family I tonight, PLEASE watch carefully.  Students should play this game with the value that the number sentence equals first.  The game does not require this, but in order to practice this important skill, please have them play it that way.  Here's an example:

For the Fact Family 6, 4, 10, the student should write the following:
10 = 6 + 4, 10 = 4 + 6, 6 = 10 - 4, 4 =10 - 6

Have fun playing Fact Family I.  :)

COMMENT BOX:  Using the example given, write the Fact Family for 7, 6, 13.  Be sure to check the comments tomorrow to make sure you are correct.

WAY TO GO, Maddox, Marissa, and Sherlyn! You answered correctly!

You used the example and wrote the number sentences with the answer first.

Silas, your first two followed directions. Think about your last two. Is the answer first?

Abby and Grace, your Fact Families are correct, but you were asked to follow the example that had the answer first.
