On Monday we were finishing Corn by Gail Gibbons (an excellent author of many non-fiction books for children). We learned many facts about corn in this non-fiction, expository text. One of the pictures showed how tall corn was after 4 weeks and then showed another picture of what corn looked like after 8 weeks. I asked the students how many days 4 weeks would be. It didn't take them long to figure out that 4 weeks was 28 days. However, it was harder to figure out how many days were in 8 weeks. Thus, THE WEEKLY CHALLENGE was created for this week!
WEEKLY CHALLENGE: You may either post it in the comment box or do it on paper and bring it to class. It is due Friday. How many days are in 8 weeks? Be sure to circle your answer and explain (with pictures, words, or numbers) HOW you got your answer. You will be rewarded for successfully completing the task. Addyson practiced using tally marks to figure this out! Her paper is in her folder!
johnny drew 8 rows of 7 circles and counted them all up to get 56, paper in his folder...
It didn't take long for Max to figure this one out. No pictures, or any other "tool". I simply told him that there were 7 days in a week which he said he already knew and that he had to figure out how many days were in 8 weeks so he used his fingers and counted to 8 seven times. His answer was 56. :)
Gavin Thompson counted up 8 times he counted to seven. He got 56 for his answer. he did it on a piece of paper and told his sister the new number after eaach 7 and she wrote it down for him.
Ansley counted using my fingers 8 times. He made a couple counting errors that we corrected as he counted on his own. He did count it up. His answer was 56
