THIS IS NOT THE HOMEWORK. Scroll down to the next entry entitled HOMEWORK 11-3-11 for tonight's homework. This is a challenge we talked about during calendar time in Miss Kristin's class. Students fulfilling this challenge will be rewarded. Students must have the answer and have an explanation for HOW they determined the answer. The answer to the challenge can be posted in the comment box OR brought to school. The challenge is also posted in Miss Kristin's room and can be solved in class. The explanations should be clear and align with first grade thinking and problem solving. THE CHALLENGE SOLUTION IS DUE FRIDAY.
CHALLENGE:
Wednesday was the 40th day of school. How many more days until the 100th day?

Addyson counted to find that there are 59 days left until the 100th day!
Tyler Hissey
Counting by tens. Each block had 10 (days) inside. We drew 10 blocks to equal 100 days. We separated the 40 days (4 blocks) to account for days already passed. Tyler was then able to count by ten the remaining 6 blocks and see that there are 60 days left.
Addyson,
Did you figure this out starting from today or the 40th day of school?
Addyson started from today...

I counted by 10s from 40 until I got to 100 and I got 60 days from Wednesday but minus 1 from 60 would be 59 from today.
100-40=60

Chloe Flythe determined that 100 days was the whole and 40 was the part that knew. So she wrote a subtraction number sentence 100-40=?. Then we marked out 1 zero from each number and made the equation 10 - 4 =6. We then added zeros back to each number to arrive at 60.
Starting from the 40th day of school.....Maximus counted that there will be 60 days left. He did this by counting on his fingers by tens. 4 fingers up was 40 and the 6 fingers down were 60. All fingers together equaled 100.
Gavin said, 60 because"I didn't know 40+60=100 but I know 4+6=10 so 40+60 has to =100"
60 and because I counted from ten and there was the whole and the five and one more made the 6 and then that was the 60 and I knew that after 5 there was six (he used his fingers and counted by ones and tens but came up with this explaination)

Kirra D., Ms. Kee's class
Kirra used her fingers with each finger counting as 10. She counted to one hundred on her fingers first, and then she took away four fingers to indicate forty days... and she said she had 60 days left.
Courtney made 100 tallys and circled 40 and counted the rest there are 60 days left!!!
